Tinashe's mother is Aimie Kachingwe, who is of Norwegian, Danish, and Italian descent. She is a former physical therapist. Tinashe's father is Michael Kachingwe, who is Zimbabwean. He is a professor, novelist, and filmmaker. Both of Tinashe's parents have been supportive of her music career and have played a significant role in her upbringing.
